Under the leadership of its seventh president, The Chicago School grew from a small institution with a single doctoral program to the world’s leading graduate school devoted exclusively to psychology and the related behavioral sciences. While our physical location changed and expanded, so too did our vision for the future. We articulated a new approach to psychology education, known as the Engaged Professional Model, and let inspiration pave the way as we designed programs focused on the application of psychology to disparate fields. These efforts were so successful—as was the culture of innovation that transpired—that we now bid farewell to Dr. Michael Horowitz as Chicago School president as he takes the helm of TCS Education System.

Garfield Park Preparatory Academy (GPPA)—an elementary school operated by The Chicago School in partnership with the Chicago Public School system—opened its doors in September for its first 120 students. The initiative offers the certainty of academic success to the economically depressed neighborhood of East Garfield Park while providing TCS students the opportunity to put skills learned in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and School Psychology classes to work. It is one of the few schools in the country to use ABA techniques to guide the educational and behavioral progress of children who would often be left behind in a system that offered less individualized support.

It was the year of Three Mile Island, the American hostages in Tehran, the Steel City winning the Super Bowl and World Series, and Margaret Thatcher becoming Great Britain’s first female prime minister. 1979 also marked the birth of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. It was 30 years ago that a troop of seven psychology practitioners banded together to sign paperwork that formally incorporated a small institution that would eventually become the world’s leading graduate psychology university. Watch for a commemorative booklet—to be released in the fall—that tells the school’s story.
The John Benitez Scholarship Fund is being established to honor Dr. Benitez’s work not only in the classroom, but at Erie Neighborhood House, where he serves as clinical director. Due largely to his efforts, Erie House became TCS’ first high-impact partner, providing Chicago School students with a wide range of internship, practicum and community service opportunities. The scholarship fund, which was launched at a November 13 reception, will provide financial support for a Chicago School student who interns at Erie House, or who formerly benefited from Erie House programs.
